The town of Darfield has grown since the 1970s, partly because it is within commuting distance of Christchurch. Among the facilities it offers is an outdoor education programme for secondary school pupils, run by the Darfield High School and Oxford Area School. The hills, mountains, lakes, rivers and forests are ideal for a range of challenging pursuits such as climbing, kayaking and mountain biking. These students are on a camp at Lake Lyndon, near Porters Pass.
