Commercial cheesemaking on Banks Peninsula dates back to the mid-19th century, when cheese produced by English and Scottish settlers was sold as far afield as Melbourne. In the 1890s a number of cheese factories started up on the peninsula. Barrys Bay Cheese carries on the tradition, making a range of gourmet cheeses. Their rinded cheddar won a top award at the 1986 Nantwich International Cheese Show.
