Motunau Island

Motunau Island

Motunau Island, with its distinctive flat top, lies 1.2 kilometres south of the mouth of the Motunau River. It has a breeding colony of 5,000 little penguins – a threatened species. Other birds breed there, including white-faced storm petrels, fairy prions, sooty shearwaters, variable oystercatchers and white-fronted terns. There are three species of lizard on the island.
