Maniapoto

Maniapoto is the eponymous ancestor of the King Country's main iwi, Ngāti Maniapoto. He was a descendant of Hoturoa, the captain of the Tainuiwaka, and lived in the 17th century. This is a carving of Maniapoto in the meeting house Te Kohaarua, at Maniaroa marae, near Awakino. In his later years Maniapoto lived in a cave called Te Ana-uriuri in Waitomo – the carving depicts him within that cave.
