Trains returned to Queen Street for the first time in 70 years when the Britomart railway station opened in 2003. One aim was to make the central city more accessible and encourage Aucklanders to use suburban trains. It seems to be working. Train use has surpassed expectations and plans are in the pipeline to build a line under the city to better link existing commuter lines – a scheme first mooted in the 1920s.
