Kaitangata mine disaster memorial cards

34 miners lost their lives in an explosion in the Kaitangata coal mine on 21 February 1879. The explosion was triggered by candles in an area known for firedamp (a flammable gas). These memorial cards were produced for men – and one 14-year-old boy – who died in the disaster.
