Manukau's cheaper housing and job opportunities in the area's industries encouraged Pacific people to settle there. In 2013 over half of Manukau's population identified as Pacific. Families were large and the population was very youthful. The area’s relative poverty was highlighted by the low rates of internet and phone access.
