Mercer war memorial

Mercer war memorial

The war memorial on the riverbank at Mercer commemorates local men who died in the First World War, but it has echoes of another war much closer to home. The statue of the soldier in marching kit stands on a gun turret from the Pioneer gunboat. The Pioneer was used to transport troops and to bombard during the Waikato war of 1863–64.
