High-rise apartments

High-rise apartments

In the 1990s surplus land by Newmarket railway station was sold and new apartment blocks were built on the site. Urban planning policies aimed to reduce city sprawl and traffic congestion by building high-density housing close to public transport. Critics condemned the plain design and small size of such apartments. Wider public concern led the city council to promote better design and introduce minimum space requirements to prevent slum-like conditions.
