Muriwai gannets

Muriwai gannets

Gannets began breeding at Muriwai in the 1900s. The colony has expanded from Oaia Island, 1.6 kilometres off the coast, to nearby Motutara Island, a rock stack (right). In 1979 the birds also moved to a headland at Otakamiro (left).
