Trams pass the corner of Riddiford and Rintoul streets in Newtown, around 1909. Trams aided Wellington’s suburban expansion, allowing workers to live further away from city workplaces. The ornate triangular building still stands.

Apparently Newtown residents were anxious to be connected with the city and so petitioned the tramway company and Wellington City Council to level Riddiford St. and connect them to the tram network.
