Ko te iwi Lapita ngā tīpuna o ngā tāngata o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa. I haere rātou ki te hī ika, i whakatipu rātou i te taro, te uhi (yam), te kuru (breadfruit); ka whāngai kararehe rātou pēnei i te poaka, te kurī, te heihei. He rite ā rātou kupu ki ā ngā iwi o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, he tauira, ko ngā kupu mō ngā kai: niu (kokonati) – ki Niue, ko nui te kupu; tales (taro) – ki Tonga ko talo te kupu; kulu (kuru) – ki Hāmoa ko ulu te kupu.
