
This is Kāpiti Island from the north, looking towards Cook Strait, in 1997. The steep cliffs were created by uplift from an offshore fault and waves eroding the shoreline. Ōkupe Lagoon is at left. In the foreground, dozens of boats are taking part in an annual fishing competition.
