Kāore noa iho i roa ka tū te kāwanatanga motuhake o Aotearoa. I te tuatahi i whakarohea te motu ki ngā porowini me ngā kāwanatanga ā-rohe. I whakaputahia te whakaahua nei i te Illustrated London Times i te tau 1857, ko te whakatakotoranga o te tūāpapa o te whare rūnanga mō te porowini o Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
