Auckland is built on a volcanic field, with small volcanic cones scattered over the landscape. The cone in the foreground of this painting is Mt Hobson in the suburb of Remuera, with Mt Victoria at Devonport in the distance (right).
Artist Peter Siddell called this painting ‘Passing clouds’, suggesting that he was more interested in the sky than the hills. Aucklanders often take their unusual landscape for granted, and many of the cones have been quarried away for aggregate.
