Story: Nelson places

Wild hops and kiln

Wild hops and kiln

Hop vines grow wild on the banks of the Riwaka River while in the distance an old hop kiln is used as a farm building. Disused hop kilns are a feature of rural Nelson especially in the Motueka and Riwaka river valleys. They can also be seen around Upper Moutere and Wakefield, showing that hops were once much more widely grown. Hops are now mainly cultivated around Riwaka.
