Boulder Bank is a 13.5-kilometre natural barrier which separates Nelson Haven from Tasman Bay. Composed of hard granodiorite boulders up to 1.2 metres in diameter, it has formed from erosion of the nearby Mackay Bluff. Waves generated by northerly storms and a north-easterly current carry boulders south-eastwards, adding to the bank.
