Nicholas Young, a surgeon’s boy on the Endeavour, was the first on the ship to sight the New Zealand coastline, on 6 October 1769. The headland known as Te Kurī-a-Pāoa/Young Nicks Head is in the middle distance in this photograph. Two days later Endeavour anchored at the mouth of the Tūranganui River, where this statue was erected in 1995.
