Formerly New Zealand's main radio receiving station, Awarua is a site for upper-atmosphere research. Two kilometres away, a European Space Agency tracking station was first used in 2008. This dish was brought in for the launch and then taken away, but a permanent satellite ground station was later installed by Venture Southland.
