Formerly New Zealand's main radio receiving station, Awarua is a site for upper-atmosphere research. Two kilometres away, a European Space Agency tracking station was first used in March 2008. This dish was brought in for the launch and then taken away, but Venture Southland was planning a permanent installation and a radio astronomy telescope.
