In the remote Hollyford Valley in Fiordland National Park, beech forest dominates, both in the valleys and on the slopes. Fiordland has Southland’s largest area of vegetation unmodified by humans. However, introduced animals such as possums and deer have done great damage to the understorey plants which used to thrive in the forest.
