Kia tae ki te 1400 AD, kua tahuna te nuinga o Te Wai Pounamu ki te ahi, kua kore he kāinga mō te hokioi, mō te moa hoki; taka rawa, ka ngaro atu ēnā manu. I te tau 1872 ka whāki tētahi Māori ki a kāwana Hōri Kerei, ko te ingoa o taua manu ko te ‘hokioi’, he pērā hoki tana tangi, ka mutu ‘i kitea e ō matou tīpuna’.
