HMS Miranda, 1862

The screw corvette HMS Miranda(left) is shown taking part in a regatta in Waitematā Harbour, Auckland, in which Māori waka also participated, in January 1862. In November 1863, during the invasion of Waikato, Miranda’s guns fired on the Māori settlement of Pūkorokoro, at the head of the Firth of Thames. The settlement of Miranda, named after the ship, was later established at Pūkorokoro.
