Eltham town hall (1 o 2)

Eltham town hall was designed by Hāwera architect John Duffill and built in 1910–11. A movie projection box, added later above the main entrance, has somewhat compromised Duffill’s design. During the 1960s and 1970s the hall regularly screened Hindi movies for Taranaki’s Indian community, who would dress up for the occasion – the women in saris and the men in suits. The building was extensively restored in 2002–3 after a campaign by local supporters. In 2009 it was used for filming Ronald Hugh Morrieson’s sinister novel Predicament.
