I have just been reading about and listening to the very moving story of the courageous young Ngati Porou soldier, Henare Kohere, who died in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. I was looking for the stain glass window in the beautiful St. Mary’s church on the East Coast and for the Ngati Porou soldier who succeeded him, at his request, after Henare passed away. I wondered if the two soldiers looking up at Christ on the Cross were depicting Henare Kohere and his successor on the battlefield? I was so moved by Henare’s story and just wanted to write to say ‘We Will Remember Them.’
