Old Wires Track: restored telegraph pole

This telegraph pole is on the Old Wires Track, which follows the route of the telegraph line across the Coromandel Ranges from Hikutaiā to Whangamatā.  This line was the last link to be completed in the Auckland-to-Wellington telegraph route, and also the last link in the national telegraph network. Before it was constructed in 1872 messages were carried by courier across the ranges.
