The endemic Chatham Island black robin (Petroica traversi) was reduced to a single breeding pair during the 1980s. A conservation programme raised the population to around 250 birds in the early 2000s. Many land birds on the Chatham Islands developed into island forms of common mainland New Zealand birds. The climate and environment formed sufficiently distinct habitats for separate species or subspecies to evolve.
