Kotahi te kāwanatanga pokapū, e ono ngā kāwanatanga porowini i raro i te pūnaha kāwanatanga o te tekau tau atu i 1850. He kaunihera kōwhiri, he kaiwhakahaere hoki tō ngā porowini. Ko ngā porowini tūturu o Te Ika-a-Māui ko Tāmaki, ko Taranaki me Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Nō te tau 1858 ka wehe mai a Te Matau-a-Māui i Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
