Nā Kāpene Kuki (James Cook) tēnei mahere whenua i tuhi i tana haerenga tuatahi ki Aotearoa i ngā tau 1769–70. Ka hoatu e ngā tāngata Māori ki a ia ngā ingoa mō Te Ika-a-Māui me Te Wai Pounamu. I tuhi a ia ‘Ea hei nom auwe’, ko te whakapae ko ‘He ahi nō Māui’, ‘He mea hī nō Māui’ rānei. Ko te āhua nei ko ‘Toai Poonamo’ tana tuhi i Te Wai Pounamu.
