E ai ki te Māori, ko te taha wairua te pūtake o ētahi o ngā mate ka pā ki te tangata. Ko Hinenui-te-pō kei waenganui i ngā kūhā o Whiro. Hei tā Hinerangitoariari, koia te ‘whāea o te mate’.
