Seventy-six traction engines line up at a rally organised by Rangiora’s Southbrook Traction Engine Club. The rally was held in March 2006 at the Rangiora Showground, and more than 16,000 people attended. It was the largest such rally ever staged in the southern hemisphere. Traction engines once played an important part in the farming district around Rangiora. They were used for winching and hauling heavy loads, and in wheat threshing, chaff cutting and sawmilling.
