The 178-kilometre Waiau River rises in the Spenser Mountains. It flows across the Hanmer and Culverden plains and through the Cheviot and Amuri districts and reaches the sea north of Gore Bay. It was bridged near the settlement of Waiau in 1883. This stretch is just south of Parnassus.
