Kōrero: Whanganui places

Alexander Hatrick, who ran steamers on the Whanganui River in the first third of the 20th century, did more than anyone to promote tourism on the river. He produced this poster in the 1910s. Scenes from the river surround a map of the route taken by the steamers, from south of Pipiriki to Taumarunui in the King Country. The trip north from Pipiriki is described effusively as a ‘scenic masterpiece’, with hills ‘whose tree-crowned crests rise to kiss the heavens’.
