I te whakamahinga o te kupu rangatiratanga mō te ‘independence' i te Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, ko taua kupu anō ka whakamahia e ngā rōpū kotahitanga Māori o te rautau 1800 hei whakamāramatanga mō te 'sovereignty'.
