Kōrero: Volcanic Plateau places

Mt Tarawera

On 10 June 1886 a massive rift opened up along the summit of Mt Tarawera, the precursor to the volcanic eruption that night. This video clip shows the line of the rift, linking two of the volcano’s summits, Ruawāhia (foreground) and Wāhanga. Pūtauaki (Mt Edgecumbe) can be seen in the distance.
