Image
How the tribe Te Aupōuri got their name

Ko Ngāti Ruānui te ingoa tūturu o Te Aupōuri iwi o Te Tai Tokerau. Tērā te wā e pakanga ana a Ngāti Ruānui ki ō rātou huānga o Te Rarawa. I tētahi riri ka whakapaea a Ikanui rāua ko Whēru, ngā rangatira o Ngāti Ruānui, i roto i tō rāua pā i Pawarenga, kei te whanga o Whāngāpē (kei konei). I tētahi pō, ka tahuna e rātou ō rātou kākahu, ka rere i te au pōuri. Nā tō rātou huna i roto i te au pōuri ka puta rātou i te whanga. Mai i tērā wā mōhiotia anō ai a Ngāti Ruānui ko Te Aupōuri.
