Economic hardship from the 1980s forced the people of Moerewa to consider creative community development initiatives. He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust was formed to provide youth training and social services, and under its auspices a number of Māori-owned businesses selling art, crafts and clothing were established. These shops were branded with the tuna (eel) symbol that has been adopted by Moerewa.
