Rock climbing on Mt Taranaki

Rock climbing on Mt Taranaki

Mt Taranaki is easily accessible for climbers and trampers. Apart from traditional winter snow and ice climbing, the mountain is fast becoming known for rock climbing on the cliffs formed by old lava flows. For trampers the ‘round the mountain route’ is popular, and the recently-developed Pouākai circuit has also become better known. Because of the mountain’s position on the west coast, the weather can often deteriorate in minutes. This unpredictability, and the peak’s accessibility, make it peak potentially dangerous for the unprepared. Between 1891 and 2017, 84 people lost their lives on the mountain.
