Rhododendron kapongii was bred by Bernard Hollard at his garden near Kaponga. The cultivar has become one of the most widely grown red rhododendrons in New Zealand. The Hollard Gardens are open to the public.

My father, Stan Betts, was a cousin to Bernie Hollard and living in Kaponga in our childhood meant we knew him and his family too. I am thrilled to have a Kaponga Rhododendron in my garden.
