I te tau 1840 ka hokona e te Kamupene o Niu Tīreni ētahi whenua ki Pākaitore (ngā māra o Moutoa). He āwangawanga ā ngā iwi o Whanganui mō tēnei hoko. Ka nui haere ngā Pākehā o te tāone, ka kuhu ngā iwi o te pito whakararo ki āna kaupapa maha, ka tipu te raruraru ki waenganui i a rātou ko ngā iwi o te pito whakarunga. Ka whakaekea te tāone i te tau 1847. I te tau 1864 ka hinga ngā taua o te pito whakarunga ki ngā taua o te pito whakararo i te pakanga ki Moutoa. Tino harikoa ngā tāngata whai o te tāone i ora rātou. Kāore i hipa te tekau mā rima marama, ka tū te maumaharatanga nei (kei ngā māra o Moutoa) mō ngā tāngata e 16 i mate i te wawaotanga o te tāone.
