Pūtiki pā, 1919

Pūtiki pā, 1919

A big crowd gathered at Pūtiki in May 1919, to welcome back two platoons of the Māori (Pioneer) Battalion, which had fought on Gallipoli and the Western Front in the First World War. The large flag in the centre was presented to Whanganui Māori by European women in the 1860s to commemorate the 1864 victory over upriver Māori on Moutoa Island.
