Gilbert Mair and the Arawa Flying Column

Gilbert Mair and the Arawa Flying Column

Captain Gilbert Mair (leading the line, at left) formed the Arawa Flying Column to help in the pursuit of the war leader and prophet Te Kooti. They are shown here in July 1870 at the south end of Lake Rotokākahi (Green Lake), some months after Te Kooti had been repelled from the Rotorua district and taken refuge in Te Urewera. He was to survive there, unapprehended, for nearly two more years.
