The Desert Road, part of State Highway 1, crosses the outer slopes of the central volcanoes. Runoff has carved into volcanic ash and mudflows (lahars), creating many streams, and the highway loops into and out of the largest of these. These exposed soil cross-sections by the road show layers from successive ash eruptions on top of a massive lahar (volcanic mudflow).
