Two children take part in a special celebration to mark Tongariro National Park’s dual world heritage site status in 1998. The park was listed in 1990 for its outstanding volcanic features, and in 1993 for its cultural significance. At the ceremony, tribes associated with the mountains Taranaki, Pūtauaki, Taupiri, Motatau, Maungapōhatu and Aoraki/Mt Cook brought treasures to place in a large hollowed-out stone from Tongariro. A commemorative plaque on the rock, outlining the area’s history as a national park and world heritage site, was unveiled by children from the Ngāti Rangi and Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribes.
