The natural vegetation in much of the Chatham Islands is low broadleaf forest, with a mixture of endemic and mainland trees and shrubs fringing the coast. The climate is cool, cloudy and moist. Vegetation also has to contend with the exposed position of the islands. Strong winds can pick up salt spray from waves breaking far out to sea, carrying it well inland, where it damages and kills foliage.
