He wāhanga tēnei nō te pepa tatauranga o Aotearoa i te tau 1918, me te urupounamu atu ki ngā kaiwhakautu, he aha tō rātou iwi, he 'Māori', he 'Māori hāwhekaehe' rānei. Nō te tau 1981, ka whakarerekēhia ngā kāwai tautuhi, mai i te 'full NZ Maori' ki ngā ōrautanga toto Māori pērā i te '1/8 Maori'. Mō te tatauranga o 2006, ka āhei ngā kaiwhakautu te whakaoti i ngā pātai i roto i ngā reo e rua, Pākehā mai, Māori atu. Ka uia rātou ki tō rātou iwitanga Māori, Pākehā, aha atu, miki rapu noa rānei.
