In 1891 John Ilott became the advertising agent for the Auckland Star. He sold advertisements on their behalf and also prepared the ads. He became New Zealand’s second advertising agent, a few months after Charles Haines. By 1899 Ilott had established himself as the North Island agent for an impressive range of newspapers in many parts of the country.
