Hot springs at Tokaanu

Hot springs at Tokaanu

The hot springs at Tokaanu, used by Māori for many years, were a popular stopping place on the tourist route that developed from the 1880s through the inland North Island. In this drawing by George Sturtevant, done around the 1890s, a bather is enjoying the pool. The distinctive shape of Maunganamu – which translates as ‘sandfly hill’ – can be seen in the distance.

Are the springs open again. They were closed in May and we need to come down for our arthritis.............. please let us know as it is a long way for a couple of elderly people to come and not be able to have treatment............
