In this video Auckland playwright Stuart Hoar talks about the realities of playwriting in New Zealand and the need for a national theatre. Hoar's first stage play, Squatter, appeared in 1987, and the following year he won the Bruce Mason Award for Playwrights. Bright Star, about astronomer Beatrice Tinsley, premiered in London in 2010. Pasefika, set in 19th-century Akaroa and Paris, won the Adam New Zealand Play award in that year. Hoar has also written over 30 radio plays, which have been broadcast in many countries.
