In 1987 Māori leaders took a case to the Court of Appeal to block the sale of land to the newly created state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The Court of Appeal ruled in their favour, a decision that was greeted with relief by tribes in the process of sorting out complicated disputes and claims in relation to their lands. The Court of Appeal, now New Zealand's intermediate appellate court, was once the highest court in New Zealand, with the final court of appeal being the Privy Council in London.
