Kōrero: Empire and Commonwealth

Commonwealth response

The All Black rugby team’s visit to South Africa in 1976 provoked a storm of international condemnation and debate. Twelve African nations formally boycotted the Montreal Olympic Games, and others simply stayed away. The issue was fiercely debated in the United Nations and at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in 1977. In an attempt to repair the damage done, the Gleneagles agreement was put together at the 1977 meeting. In this June 1977 news footage, leaders of Nigeria, Jamaica and Canada discuss New Zealand’s position.
